How to Get DJ Gigs at Bars and Clubs

Short answer: Gigs come from direct outreach, not waiting to be discovered. The loop: (1) build a list of venues that actually book DJs, (2) find who books entertainment, (3) send a short pitch + one matching mix link, (4) follow up once, a week later, (5) say yes to off-nights and turn them into residencies. Most DJs lose at step 1 — they don't know which rooms even hire.

Step 1: Build the venue list (the step everyone skips)

"Getting gigs" is a sales pipeline, and a pipeline starts with a list. You want every bar, lounge, club and event space within your radius that books entertainment — with a phone number and ideally who runs the nights. Walking your city works; so does mining Instagram location tags. The fast way: RiddimDJ Pro's Gig Finder searches any city worldwide and returns venues that book DJs, with contact details and a DJ-likelihood score, plus tracking for who you've called and pitched — one search on a single city returned 20 venues with a high-likelihood club at the top.

Step 2: Find the booker, not the bar

Emails to info@ die. You want the bar manager, owner, or the promoter who runs the night — ask a bartender on a slow evening ("who books your DJs?"), check the venue's tagged posts for the promoter's handle, or call at 3pm on a weekday when managers actually answer.

Step 3: The pitch (short beats impressive)

Three sentences: who you are and what you play, why their room specifically ("your Friday crowd leans dancehall and your current rotation ends at 1am"), and the ask ("I'd love a shot at your Thursday — here's a 30-minute mix that matches your vibe"). One link. No press kit unless they ask. Bookers buy two things: you fit the room, and you bring or keep bodies.

Step 4: Follow up exactly once a week later

Most bookings happen on the follow-up — bookers are busy, not uninterested. One polite bump ("checking back — happy to do a trial night") a week later. After that, move on and re-pitch in a quarter; pestering burns rooms permanently.

Step 5: Off-nights are the front door

Nobody hands a stranger Saturday night. Thursdays, Sunday day parties, and holiday-eve one-offs are how every residency starts. Treat an off-night like a Saturday — full prep, full energy, phone-light moments the manager sees — and the better slots follow.

The set is ready. Now find who's booking. Gig Finder searches clubs, lounges and event spaces worldwide — contacts, DJ-likelihood scores, and outreach tracking built in. One of 8 tools in RiddimDJ Pro. See how it works →

Walk in over-prepared

The gig you get is won by the set you play: crates tagged and ordered before you arrive, cues on every track, an energy arc planned for the room. That's the whole point of the prep suite — see how to structure set energy and the crate workflow, or grab the free Set-Prep Playbook.
