How to Structure DJ Set Energy: The Energy Arc Method

Short answer: Score every track's intensity 1–9 (not its BPM — BPM lies), then shape the night as an arc: open 4–5, build 6–7, peak in 8–9 waves, land deliberately. Write the scores into your library so warm-up, mid and peak crates build themselves, and never fire two peak tracks back-to-back before the room has earned it.

Why BPM lies to you

Two songs at 95 BPM can do opposite jobs: one is a lover's rock groove that melts the room, the other a peak-time anthem that detonates it. Tempo measures speed; energy measures impact — drum density, bass weight, vocal aggression, arrangement. DJs who sort by BPM alone keep reaching for "same-speed" songs that kill their own momentum. The fix is a second number.

The 1–9 scale

BandFeelDancehall/reggae/soca examples
1–3Chill / settleLover's rock, slow jams, R&B blends
4–5Groove / standardStandard dancehall, conscious reggae, mid R&B
6–7Dance / clubClub dancehall, hype hip-hop, peak-time build
8–9Peak / roadCarnival soca, power soca, road march, wheel-up anthems

Score it once, write it into a tag Serato displays (Comment works), and the number travels with the track forever.

The arc: how a night should move

Open (first hour): 4–5. Nobody dances to a 9 in an empty room — they just notice the room is empty. Build: 6–7 as bodies arrive, with 5s as breathers. Peak: 8–9 in waves — two or three songs up, one down a notch, back up; a flat ceiling of 9s numbs the floor within twenty minutes. Land: step down on purpose — the last thirty minutes decide what people remember. The most common rookie kill: two drops back-to-back at 11pm, floor peaks early, nothing left for 1am.

Scoring 10,000 tracks without losing a month

Hand-scoring a library is honest work that nobody finishes. RiddimDJ Pro's Energy Analyzer listens to the audio itself and scores every track 1–9 — analyzing the actual bars, not the metadata — then writes the score to a Serato-visible tag, color-banded so you can plan transitions at a glance. Whole folders in one pass; files never modified until you save. Combined with key ordering (the Camelot guide), your gig crate becomes: right riddims, right keys, right energy curve — before you leave the house.

Same BPM, different energy — finally visible. Energy Analyzer scores every track 1–9 automatically and writes it into Serato. One of 8 tools in RiddimDJ Pro. See how it works →
