The 24 musical keys are arranged on a clock: numbers 1–12, each with an A side (minor) and B side (major). Neighboring codes share most of their notes, which is why moving one step sounds seamless. You never need to know that 8A is A minor — the codes do the theory for you.
| Move | Example | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Same code | 8A → 8A | Perfect blend — the juggling default |
| ±1 number | 8A → 7A or 9A | Seamless key travel around the wheel |
| Letter swap | 8A → 8B | Minor↔major mood shift, same notes mostly |
| +2 boost | 8A → 10A | Deliberate energy lift — use at peak moments |
The move to avoid: big random jumps (+7 is the classic trainwreck). If you must get across the wheel, travel in ±1 steps over a few songs.
House DJs blend long instrumental stretches; small clashes hide under filters. Dancehall is the opposite: vocals are exposed, melodic, and constant — and juggling means you're transitioning every 60–90 seconds, dozens of times a night. Every one of those transitions is a chance for two singers to fight in different keys. A harmonically ordered set removes the fight before you leave the house.
Computing key moves live, mid-juggle, at 1am is a losing game. The working approach: analyze keys once, write them to your library, then order each gig crate so consecutive tracks are always a safe move apart — within BPM bands so tempo stays smooth too. That ordering job is exactly what RiddimDJ Pro's Harmonic Set List automates: pick a crate, and it sorts the whole thing by BPM and Camelot key, scores the set's overall harmony, and flags every clash it couldn't avoid with a suggested fix (a real 111-track crate ordered at 83% harmony in seconds). Then save it back to Serato as an ordered crate.
One page, tape it near the decks: the wheel as a table, the safe moves, and the +2 boost rule. Download the free Camelot cheat sheet (PDF). For the full pre-gig flow — tagging, scoring, key order, cues — see the dancehall crate workflow and the energy arc method.
